width: 100%;\" class=\"slide-865 ms-image\" aria-roledescription=\"slide\" data-date=\"2016-04-26 19:47:33\" data-filename=\"IMG_9203-505x400.jpg\" data-slide-type=\"image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/midwestalevi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_9203-505x400.jpg\" height=\"400\" width=\"505\" alt=\"\" class=\"slider-856 slide-865 msDefaultImage\" \/><\/li>\n            <\/ul>\n        <\/div>\n        \n    <\/div>\n<\/div><\/p>\n<p>Orta-Bat\u0131 Amerika\u2019da ya\u015fayan Alevi-Bekta\u015fi Toplumunun \u00fcyeleri olarak, T\u00fcrkiye\u2019de AKP h\u00fck\u00fcmeti taraf\u0131ndan S\u00fcriye&#8217;li m\u00fcltecilerin dram\u0131n\u0131n Anadolu\u2019da ya\u015fayan Alevilere kar\u015f\u0131 bir demografik sava\u015f arac\u0131 olarak kullan\u0131lmas\u0131n\u0131 \u015eikago Konsoloslu\u011fu on\u00fcnde protesto ettik.<br \/>\nBunun o bolgelerde ya\u015fayan Alevi-Bekta\u015filerin asimilasyonu i\u00e7in uygulamaya sokulan demografik ve k\u00fclt\u00fcrel bir transformasyon projesi oldu\u011funa inaniyoruz.<br \/>\nMACC Kuzey Amerika&#8217;da mevcut di\u011fer Alevi-Bekta\u015fi kurulu\u015flariyla birlikte, AKP h\u00fck\u00fcmetinin ayr\u0131l\u0131k\u00e7\u0131 uygulamalarina kar\u015f\u0131 durmaya devam edecektir.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sivrice Huyuk Is Not Alone<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/midwestalevi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/edited-image1ENG.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-817\" src=\"http:\/\/midwestalevi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/edited-image1ENG.png\" alt=\"edited image1ENG\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/midwestalevi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/edited-image1ENG.png 960w, https:\/\/midwestalevi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/edited-image1ENG-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/midwestalevi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/edited-image1ENG-600x450.png 600w, https:\/\/midwestalevi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/edited-image1ENG-800x600.png 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>PUBLIC DECLARATION TO CONDEMN AKP GOVERNMENT\u2019S USE OF<br \/>\nSYRIAN REFUGEES\u2019 PLIGHT AS A WEAPON OF DEMOGRAPHIC<br \/>\nWARFARE AGAINST THE ALEVIS IN TURKEY<br \/>\nWe, as members of the organizations and groups listed below, living in different parts of<br \/>\nNorth America, are making this public declaration to express our deep concern about the<br \/>\nrecent plans of the AKP government to establish container cities for Syrian refugees in a<br \/>\nhandful of remaining Alevi enclaves in Anatolia which, we believe, is a deliberate and<br \/>\ncunning project aimed at surreptitiously implementing a demographic and cultural<br \/>\ntransformation of related regions that will dislocate Alevis from their historical homes<br \/>\nand ancient sacred sites.<br \/>\nThe reprehensible use of the Syrian refugees as instruments to advance the AKP<br \/>\ngovernment\u2019s anti-Alevi sectarian agenda came to surface recently with the start of the<br \/>\nconstruction of a container city for around 27,000 Sunni Syrian refugees in the middle of<br \/>\nsixteen predominantly Alevi populated villages with a combined population of 4,000 in<br \/>\nthe Pazarc\u0131k district of Turkey\u2019s southern province of Mara\u015f. The project was launched<br \/>\nlate in March 2016 without any prior public notice or discussion, and is continuing under<br \/>\nheavy gendarmerie protection, despite mass demonstrations and an ongoing peaceful sitin<br \/>\nprotest by the local residents. The protestors have been attacked more than once by the<br \/>\ngendarmerie with tear gas and water cannons resulting in the death of 82 year old Mor<br \/>\nAli Kabayel, who died due to complications caused by the tear gas. The local residents<br \/>\nnot only object to the unlawful confiscation of their animals\u2019 grazing land, but are also<br \/>\ndeeply concerned about their security. They fear that Syrian jihadists, infamous for their<br \/>\nextreme religious hatred and mass-murders of such minorities as the Alevis, may move<br \/>\ninto their midst disguised as refugees. Such fears are also historically well-grounded, as<br \/>\nMara\u015f is one of several areas where Alevis were subjected to mass killings by ultra-right<br \/>\nwing Sunni radicals in the late 1970s, in the run up to the 1980 military coup d\u2019\u00e9tat. In<br \/>\nthe wake of the massacres, many Alevis fled their homes in Mara\u015f to migrate to urban<br \/>\ncenters within Turkey and in different Western countries, leaving behind a severely<br \/>\nreduced Alevi population. The local residents believe that the settlement of<br \/>\ndisproportionately high numbers of Syrian refugees will not only dwarf them numerically<br \/>\nin their own homes, but also lay the ground for future sectarian conflicts and new waves<br \/>\nof Alevi emigration, or even massacres, thereby striking a final blow to Alevi presence in<br \/>\nthe environs of Mara\u015f.<br \/>\nWhat lends credence to these suspicions, and adds to the gravity of the situation, is the<br \/>\naccumulating evidence that the container city in Pazarc\u0131k-Mara\u015f may be just the tip of the<br \/>\niceberg of a much broader and systematic demographic warfare launched by the AKP<br \/>\ngovernment with the ultimate aim of eradicating all the remaining Alevi enclaves from<br \/>\nrural Anatolia. While the mainstream Turkish media, working under heavy government<br \/>\ncensorship, is virtually silent about the issue, information shared through social media has<br \/>\nexposed several other planned camps in other regions such as the districts of Divri\u011fi,<br \/>\n\u0130mranl\u0131, Zara, and Y\u0131ld\u0131zeli in Sivas, as well as Ak\u00e7ada\u011f in Malatya, all of which have<br \/>\nonly one thing in common: they are all areas well-known for their almost exclusively<br \/>\nAlevi populations, and for housing several ancient sites considered sacred by the Alevis.<br \/>\nIndeed, anybody with a basic familiarity of the demographic map of Anatolia looking at<br \/>\nthe list of the planned container cities for Syrian refugees would readily get the<br \/>\nimpression that they were handpicked almost exclusively with that criterion in mind.<br \/>\nAlso telling, the government has so far failed to respond to two official inquiries from the<br \/>\ntwo opposition parties of the parliament requesting a complete list of the locations of all<br \/>\nplanned container cities for the Syrian refugees, and an explanation of the basis on which<br \/>\nthey were chosen.<br \/>\nThe AKP government\u2019s apparent instrumentalization of the Syrian refugees\u2019 plight as a<br \/>\nweapon of demographic warfare against the Alevis is not without a broader context of<br \/>\nrepressive and assimilationist state policies targeting this historically disenfranchised<br \/>\nreligious minority. Though surprisingly little known outside of the country, Alevi<br \/>\ncommunities, together with the kindred Bektashi order, constitute the second largest<br \/>\nsocio-religious community in Turkey, making up around 15% of the country\u2019s overall<br \/>\npopulation. The Alevis are clearly set apart from mainstream Muslims by their markedly<br \/>\nesoteric teachings, which bear a close affinity with Sufism and a number of pre-Islamic<br \/>\nmystical traditions. They are further differentiated from Sunni or Shi\u2018i Muslims by their<br \/>\nnon-observance of formal obligations of normative Islam and their distinct liturgy, the<br \/>\ncem, which both men and women attend, contrary to the strict rules of gender segregation<br \/>\nprescribed in sharia. Though Alevi mystical poetry and music, traditionally performed<br \/>\nduring cem rituals, remain important components of the Alevi collective identity, most<br \/>\nAlevis today live secular lives, and are associated with secular progressive politics and<br \/>\nideas.<br \/>\nIn the past, Alevis practiced their religion in secret due to fears of harassment by their<br \/>\nSunni neighbors and the state authorities who viewed them with suspicion because of<br \/>\ntheir religious and political non-conformism. Despite the officially secular character of<br \/>\nthe Turkish Republic, and Alevis\u2019 civic struggle for legal recognition and equal rights<br \/>\nsince the Alevi cultural revival of the early 1990s, Alevis are still deprived of their basic<br \/>\nreligious freedoms, and routinely face formal and informal discrimination. Their places<br \/>\nof worship, the cemevis, are not legally recognized and Alevi children are indoctrinated<br \/>\nwith the Sunni-orthodox version of Islam in the mandatory religious classes that all<br \/>\nstudents in Turkey must attend from elementary school through high-school\u2014 on both<br \/>\naccounts, the AKP government stands in clear violation of the principle of secularism<br \/>\nenshrined in the Turkish Constitution, as well as of the legally binding decisions of the<br \/>\nEuropean Court of Human Rights that, in its various verdicts, called on Turkey to end<br \/>\ncompulsory religion classes, and treat the cemevis on a par with other houses of worship<br \/>\nsuch as mosques, churches, and synagogues.<br \/>\nIn the last five years of AKP rule, Alevis\u2019 disenfranchisement has deepened even further<br \/>\nwith the government\u2019s accelerated top-down Islamization of broader Turkish society and<br \/>\nthe corollary intensification of sectarian discourse in its domestic and foreign policy. The<br \/>\nhandpicking of Alevi villages as sites to build container cities for Sunni Syrian refugees<br \/>\nis yet another example of the aggressive and extremely disconcerting social-engineering<br \/>\nproject implemented by the AKP government to recast Turkish society in accordance<br \/>\nwith a conservative form of Sunni Islam; it, in fact, represents an attempt by AKP to<br \/>\ncarry its assimilationist policies to a whole new level of viciousness.<br \/>\nWe, the undersigned, find unacceptable, and condemn, the AKP government\u2019s concerted<br \/>\nefforts to eliminate Alevi demographic presence in Anatolia, whether by dislocating them<br \/>\nfrom their homes or by assimilating them through state-led Islamization. We, therefore,<br \/>\ncall on the AKP government to cease immediately the construction of a container city for<br \/>\nSyrian refugees in Pazarc\u0131k-Mara\u015f, rescind all others planned in a handful of Alevi<br \/>\nenclaves in rural Anatolia, and to abandon all of its sectarian and assimilationist policies<br \/>\ntargeting the Alevis.
